  Bred Ewe Sales List 2008

updated January 2008

Key to the data: Scrapie number/Flock number/color and pattern/horned or polled (if h/p is indicated then the lamb has horned genes but horns are not yet apparent. Horns can take a year or more to appear) /birth number single-twin-triplet/lambing record if an adult/ sire/dam/dam’s lambing record (a ? indicated that the ewe may have lambed and a coyote or dog got the lamb)/% AI breeding/ Named Iceland sires or famous ewes or rams that are in the ewes genetic background/price FOB. Those that have 50% AI are the same as a lamb that is the results of artificial insemination. Sheep that have both sire and dam as AI sheep are the same % of Iceland genetics as the result of using artificial insemination with imported semen.

We offer 10% off for purchases of 3 or more sheep for first time buyers and ˝ off your choice of rams with 3 or more ewes. (This is our starter flock offer. Only one offer per farm or family) 1/3 down will hold your choice. The balance is due at the time of pick up or delivery. Delivery can usually be arranged.

As always I will mentor you till you don’t need me any more! I love helping folks get a home business started with their sheep.

Why buy from us? We have a large flock and cull hard. With 200 or more lambs being born on the farm each year we have the opportunity to select only the best ewes and rams as replacements. All of our ewes are under constant pressure to perform. We won't put up with ewes that have any faults as 100 ewe labs are waiting to that her place. Our culls go to the butcher and not to customers. We have the largest AI genetic gene pool representing more Iceland sires than any other breeder. Tongue River Farm sheep have consistently won championships every time shown for conformation and fleece. Out fleeces win top awards. We don't keep anything with problems and don't sell them to you. We don't sell any animal that has had to be helped to lamb. We don't sell rams that have been assisted to be born. We stand in back of our animals. We are available to help you with your sheep after the sale until you don't need us anymore.

The hidden values are things we select for like excellent udder shape. Udders that are well suspended will hold up well even with high milking ewes and not become pendulous in such a way that the lambs can not find the teats. Low teats mean that you will have to spend alot of time teaching the lambs how to find the teats. We strive for low work sheep for ourselves and for you.

Teat size is something we select for. Teats that are placed well and pointed on the ends so that the lamb can find them when first born are a high consideration when we select breeding stock.

Ewes that breed quickly and have consistent high quality fast gaining excellent fleeced lambs are a must. Excellent conformation is essential. Good wide bodies and square conformation is essential. High quality for meat conformation is selected for.

Ewes that milk well and have a long lactation are selected. Ewes that conceive easily and lamb easily are a must in out flock. Ewes that have excellent fleeces and produce lambs with excellent fleeces are a must.

Lambs from sires with large testicle size, relates to the reproductive parts of his sons and daughters. Rams that have a high libido is important as it indicates virility and will be passed on to the offspring. While I will cull rams that are aggressive to humans, this aggressiveness is sometimes attributed to how the ram was socialized by the shepherd as a lamb. I never make friends with rams and rarely have any problems with aggressive rams. Likewise very docile rams may lack the virility and hardiness needed to survive well. We select rams with high libido to sire our lambs. We have over 100 ram lambs to select from so only the best get a chance to sire lambs for us and for you.

These and many other traits are what we are selecting for. We have over 100 ewe lambs that are ready to replace their dams every year so only the best ewes stay in the flock. This means that you will get excellent quality when you buy stock from us.
